Hair thinning on the scalp
Probably the most frequent and common symptoms of baldness are the thinning of hair on the scalp. For a lot of men, and for some women, hair thinning is probably one of the first indications of balding. Some people don’t even realize that their hair is beginning to thin until somebody else tells them. And there are those who may notice that their hair is falling out at an increased rate when they are washing and brushing it.
Receding hairline
This is a frequently occurring symptom that in men. In these cases the hairline appears to be “sliding” in the center of their forehead. In some cases, the hairline may start receding on the sides of the forehead and then it gradually recedes in the middle of the scalp.
Balding at the crown
Both men and women can exhibit the symptom of hair loss that goes by the term balding at the crown. The person’s loss usually begins with a thinning of hair at the crown of their head. Oftentimes, the balding only occurs in this area of the head. It rarely extends beyond this area. Total balding in these individuals is unusual.
Alopecia Areata
Another name for this type of balding is “patchy hair loss”. It is seen in men, women and children. Usually, there is some kind of illness that causes this symptom. Most commonly, ringworm is the cause. With the ringworm infection, patches of dry, flaky scalp will occur and the hair loss occurs in these areas.
Hair shedding
Everyone sheds hair all of the time. But in this case we are talking about extreme cases. This is another symptom that is common in baldness. Usually, the cause is some kind of health problem, such as anemia or stress. Hair shedding also commonly occurs when the individual is being treated for cancer by chemotherapy or radiation. In these cases, total and complete hair loss can result from the hair shedding. But, in these situations, the hair will grow back once the underlying cause is resolved.
